| Reducing the cost of FM tuner integration |
|
MP3 manufacturers are looking for ways to reduce cost and size of their products while introducing new features such as an FM Tuner. A difficult problem when each new system typically requires a new module to be integrated with its associated cost and area. An improved method is to integrate Kaben's FM Tuner IP into their existing die. The FM Tuner analog function would be integrated along side the MP3 while the digital portion could be integrated in C code in the ARM or MIPS processor. The increase die size would cost roughly 10 cents in a 130 nm CMOS technology. When compared to $0.50 to $0.75 cost of buying a chip and the additional cost Varactors, Capacitors, Inductors, Resistors, Substrate, and assembly which can be an additional $0.15 to $0.40, the savings become quite attractive.
